About Rongo University

Welcome to Rongo University (RU) – A Prestigious Institution with a Rich History

Welcome to Rongo University (RU), a prestigious institution with a rich history dating back to the early 1970s. Discover the journey of our university from its humble beginnings as Kitere Technical School to its current status as a full-fledged public university.

Originally established in the 1970s by the Kitere community, the institution began as a craft apprenticeship center. Due to growing regional demand for higher technical education, the Union of South Nyanza Welfare Association (USNWA) successfully lobbied President Daniel Arap Moi in the 1980s to convert it into a public institution—later named Moi Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1983.

In 2007, a partnership with Moi University enabled MIT to offer diploma and degree programs. The inaugural intake of 100 students began in 2008. The campus grew quickly, and in 2012, it was elevated to Rongo University College. On October 7, 2016, it was officially granted a charter, becoming Rongo University.

Today, RU serves over 6,000 students and offers both government-sponsored and privately funded programs, driven by over 500 dedicated academic and administrative staff members.

Our mission is to provide high-quality, market-driven academic programs; foster innovation through impactful research and community engagement; and contribute to Kenya’s development through quality education.

We take pride in our strong roots, community support, and visionary leadership. We are deeply grateful to our founders, local leaders, government stakeholders, and the Kitere community for laying the strong foundation we build on today.

Join us in shaping the future—through excellence in teaching, research, and innovation at Rongo University.
